Born in Gijón in 1971, studied violin and piano at the Music Conservatory Oviedo, first violinist in the youth orchestra. In 1985, won 2nd prize in the “Casa Vienna” contest for young pianists. In 1989, was conferred with the title “Professor of Piano”. Assistant conductor to famous and prestigious conductors of the Oviedo Opera Festival from 1989 to 1993 and as a “concertista” working with Vincenzo Menghini, first bassoon, RAI Orchestra, Turin. |
In 1991, having attended conducting courses for chorus and orchestra in Spain and other countries, entered the “Accademy of Music and Dramatic Arts ” in Vienna to study orchestra conducting with Karl Österreicher and Leopold Hager, graduating in 1993 cum laude. In 1995 assistant conductor to Richard Edlinger, principal conductor of the “United Philarmonic Vienna” and won the International Competition for Conductors, “Dinu Niculescu”, in Romania and prize for “Best interpreter of Romanian music”.
In 1996, won 3rd prize in Competition for Conductors in Baden (Vienna) and conducted El Estudiante Mendigo, Il Pippistrello, La Princesa de las zarzas, El Barón Gitano, and El pais de la risa; conducted El Hombre de la Mancha in Merano (Italy). With O.R.F., Vienna conducted the Viennese Orchestra “Pro-Arte” in the world premiere of opus Drei Bestiarien by T. Krinzinger.
In 1997, awarded the superior title in orchestra conducting by the Accademy of Music and Dramatic Arts, Vienna, conducting the ORF Orchestra to great public acclaim. Tournée with La Princesa de las Zarzas in Germany with the “Johann Strauss Ensemble”. Tournèe in Spain with Il Flauto Magico with “New Bulgarian Opera / Teatro Lirico Europeo”, later becoming Musical and Artistic Director, conducting Don Giovanni, Tosca, Carmen, Aida and Turandot. In Gijón and León, conducted the Spanish premiere of Alfonso y Estrella by F.Schubert.
In 1999 finalist in “The National Competition for Conductors “ Granada in 1999 and conducted Granada Symphony Orchestra in various concerts. Also finalist in “VI European Competition for Conductors”, Spoleto, Italy ; conducted “O.S.P.A” orchestra in concert and in Gijón New Year’s Concert with “Virtuosi form Moscow”.
From 2000 to 2001 director of the chorus of the Oviedo Opera. Conducted Verdi Centenary Concert with the bass Yevgeny Nesterenko leading the “Virtuosi di Mosca”, and working also as pianist and becoming guest conductor of the “United Philarmonic Orchestra Vienna”. In 2001 assistant director to Bertrand de Billy at the Teatro Liceo Barcelona, working also with Richard Bonynge and Friedrich Haider.
From 2001 to 2004 assistant to Marcello Viotti. In 2004 assistant to Giuliano Carella in "Don Pasquale" at the Teatro Real, Madrid and “Madama Butterfly” in various Italian theatres. Conducted numerous concerts with the above orchestras and with the “Symphony Orchestra of Santa Sofia”, “Symphony Orchestra of Cordoba” and two Puccini Galas for “Città Lirica Orchestra”, Lucca (Italy ).
Assistant to G. Carella in Luisa Miller in Liegi; conducted Carlos Alvarez in concerts and zarzuelas, and in 2005 as protagonist in Pelagio by S. Mercadante with the “O.S.P.A. Orchestra”, Gijón. Revised and published the musical score of Pelagio to great acclaim by both public and critics.
In 2006 conducted this revised Pelagio. Conducted Montserrat Caballè in concert, singing the principal aria of the protagonist in Pelagio, together with other operatic and zarzuela highlights. Conducted Nabucco, tournee in France and Madama Butterfly in Teatro Bolshoi, Minsk, becoming the first guest conductor. Conducted the Spanish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (RTVE).
Has conducted Zarzuelas in Spagna, El gaitero de Xixòn, La Tabernera del puerto, Marina e Doña Francisquita, the last two with “ l’Orch. Pablo Sarasate“ and “ l’Orch. Filarmonica di Màlaga“.
As piano accompanist and pianist has worked in Italy, Spain and recently in London. In the course of his career he has worked alongside, besides those already mentioned, Edita Gruberova, Manuel Lanza, Simon Estes, José Bros, Milagros Poblador, José Sempere, Dolora Zajick, Wolfang Brendel, Mario Malagnini, Anne Marie Swenson, Joan Pons, and Veronic Gens.
Future engagements include Tosca and Otello in Germany with Eduardo Villa, principal conductor of Madama Butterfly with the “Frankfurter Symphoniker” and Keith Ikaia-Purdy, and an assignment to resurrect the score of another lost opera by Mercadante.
In 2008 and 2009 he conducted: Carmen, Cavalleria rusticana, Madama Butterfly, The little sweep, La cenerentola, etc...and diverses concerts...
and PELAGIO at the italian summer opera festival in Martina Franca.
He worked with stage directors as Jean Louis Pichon, Giancarlo Del Monaco,Stefano Monti, Emilio Sagi.
In the season 2009/2010 he conducted new productions of Carmen, Cavalleria rusticana, Madama Butterfly, The little sweep, La cenerentola, etc...and diverses concerts...
New productionsbeginer for Mariano Rivas as new conductor in the season 2010 in Kiel was Faust by Ch.Gounod
New productions in the season 2010/2011 in Kiel are Gershwin-Musicals CRAZY FOR YOU and the Opera im Schauspielhaus DER LEUCHTTURM (The Lighthouse).
He also conducted the revival of DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, RUSALKA, LA BOHÈME, SALOME und FAUST and a OPERAGALA, with Angela Meade.
With the beginning of the season 2011 / 2012 he will conduct the new productions of BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA and he also is responsible for the revivals of I LOMBARDI, NUSSKNACKER, LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN
The symphonic side include abonnement concerts and Childrensconcerts with the Kieler Philharmoniker as well as youth concerts with moderation. The Opera of Ankara has invited him in February-March 2012 to conduct the new production of Rusalka in Turkish.
Mariano Rivas will continue to conduct at the season 2012/2013 the Kieler Philharmoniker at the Kiel opera House and will become Co-principal Conductor at the Tibilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre

Since march 2014 Mariano Rivas is Profesor and teaching at the Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid and
Musical Director at OPERA DE MADRID where he has already conducted the operas Rigoletto and Boheme and now he is still conducting the Zarzuelas “La Gran vía” and “Agua, azucarillos, y aguardiente”…
